HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. HIFU uses multiple ultrasound beams to penetrate deep into the skin. It has an ability to reach deeper layers than all other non-invasive facial treatments, whilst still protecting the surface of the skin.
Depending on the area of your face, or body, a different level of ultrasound penetration will be used. For the delicate, thinner skin around the eye, the ultrasound penetrates to just 1.5mm whereas the thicker skin on your cheeks requires a penetration of 3.0mm - 4.5mm to reach the deeper layer. This deeper layer is called the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) and is the same layer tightened in a conventional facelift. The ultrasound beams converge in a targeted area to create thermal energy which makes the skin tighten and contract. It also stimulates new collagen fibres to form.
